The famous Danny

May 28, 2007

Saw a joke from a magazine yesterday:

Danny told one of his new friend Jack that he is the most popular guy in the world and everyone knows him. Jack doesn’t believe him and asked him to proof it. So they went to a nearby bar and sat down for a drink. Jack soon noticed that everyone passingby their seats greets Danny.

After the drink Jack wanted to take it further. So they left the bar and head down the streets. To his surprise everyone walking on the street greets Danny as well !

‘Even the prime minister knows me too.’ said Danny.

Jack doesn’t believed him and so he took Jack to a road near the White House. After a while, 3 black Mercedes car passed by and stopped right in front of them. The car in the middle scrolled down the window, and the prime minister showed up.

‘Hi Danny !’ said the prime minister.

Jack was totally speechless and after a while, he told Danny:’I bet the Pope doesn’t know you’. And Danny said:’Well lets go and meet Pope and we’ll find out !’

So they went to the Pope’s house and Danny went inside the house. The Pope gave Danny a warm welcome and treat both of them with great hospitality on the balcony. Jack was totally blank and he asked to went out for a cigarette. After Danny finished chatting with the Pope, they went out of the house and found Jack fainted in the middle of the street.

‘Jack ! Jack ! What happpened to you ?!?’ asked Danny.

After gaining conciousness, Jack replied:’There was a group of visitors passing by the street and asked me a question, and then I just fainted !’

‘What they asked ?’ Danny said.

‘Who is that standing beside Danny on the balcony?’

My escape from pressure

May 28, 2007

I always got addicted to computer games. Games are good for escaping myself from pressures.

I don’t like big games though. DoTa, Final Fantasy N, Half Life, are just not my types. They kill too much of my precious time.

I like to go for games that are short in interval. No need for good tactics and strategy. Because my tactics and strategy are devoted for my studies.

Sometimes they kill my times even more just to beat that darn record :P

Counting trees

May 28, 2007

Counting the number of apples in a box is easy, one, two, three, four… and so on. Therefore some people might think that counting numbers is easy. But when the number gets big, you can’t do it like the way you count the apples.

Take for an example counting the number of trees on a mountain. If it is a big mountain, its hard to count alone. You need to find more peoples, assign them to different sectors. However, there will be errors of repeated count or miscount. So how do you count the exact correct number of trees ?

The most easy way is to mark on the trees to avoid repeated count. But marking on trees have some disadvantages. First, how do you assure that no trees are left out? Marking on trees could avoid repeated counts, but could not avoid miscount. Moreover, doing marks on trees will lower the value of the trees. Besides that, even if all the peoples pay their full attention on counting the trees, there might be one or two of them does some mistakes. So, how to count the trees correctly? Before scrolling down, think about it for a moment.

First, take a guess of the number of trees on the mountain. Prepare some ropes to tie on the trees. Then distribute the ropes to each people, and each of them need to tie those ropes on the trees.

When all the trees are tied, use the number of prepared ropes, minus the number of trees left untied, and you will get the answer !

For example if you prepared 10,000 ropes, and there are 3500 ropes left, then the number of trees will be:

10,000 – 3500 = 6500 trees

A great way to make sure all the trees are unharmed and counted correctly !

A humble wish ? A greedy wish ?

May 27, 2007

Once upon a time in japan, there was a warrior who won in a battle. His commander was pleased and promised to give him anything he wants as a reward. So the warrior said

[Here is a chess board. It has 9 x 9 small square block on it. Today, please place 1 rice on the top left square and let me take home. Tomorrow, place 2 rice on the next square and let me take home. The next day, place 4 rice on the following square and let me take home. And continue to double the amount of rice on each following day until all the square block on the chess are occupied.]

 The commander thought to himself

[All I need to do is to place some rice on the blocks for 81 days and let him take home. What a humble wish he'd asked for !]

And so without hestitation the commander granted the warrior’s wish. But, was it really a humble wish?

 day 1: 1 rice (2^0)

day 2: 2 rice (2^1)

day 3: 4 rice (2^2)

day 4: 8 rice (2^3)

day 10: 1024 rice (2^10)

day 20: 1 million rice (2^20)

day 30: 1 billion rice

day 40: 1.1 trillion rice

day 50: 1.1 quadrillion (1000 billion)

day 60: 1.2 quintillion

day 70: 1.2 sextillion (1000 trillion)

day 80: 1.2 septillion

day 81: 2.4 septillion

How huge was the number 2.4 septillion ? Erm … try to fully utilise google … I guess google can explain it … (or not ?!?!?)

Do you think you can place 2.4 septillion on a square block on the chess board ? No. Not even on a small island.

Mathematics and Calculations

May 27, 2007

Since when do human beings start to know how to calculate ? Its hard to give a precise answer. However, its been way since 2000 years B.C. when there were calculations with certain degree of complexity. The oldest source of mathematics found so far is a sketch on papyrus from the great egypt kingdom around 1650 years B.C. On the sketch, there was an interesting question:

[There are 7 rooms, each room has 7 cat, each cat caught 7 mouse, each mouse ate 7 straws of wheats, each straws has 7 wheats. How much wheat has been eaten?]

During that timeframe, this question is considered to be a tough question.

Answer:

room: 7

cat: 7 x 7 = 49

mouse: 49 x 7 = 343

Straws: 343 x 7 = 2401

Wheat: 2401 x 7 = 19600

Hello world ~!

May 27, 2007

It’s an internet tradition which programmers are familiar of writing the first “Hello world !” program, or creating the first “Hello world !” website as a noob entry level in the cyber world. Well this is my first blogging experience and I would say the same thing to the world.

Cute ?
